After teaching for 34 years at Arthur P. Schalick High School in Pittsgrove , Evelyn Porter was definitely not ready for the rocking chair when she retired in 2010.
With a love for cooking, and two daughters who share her love — one in teas and the other in baking — Porter and her children decided to go into the cafe business — together.
When you enter their establishement, the Ginger Cake Cafe in Woodstown , the aroma of fresh-baked goodies and steaming specialty teas immediately welcomes you.
Part of Porter’s inspiration for opening such an eatery came from a business which is no longer in the area.
“The White Rabbit Tea Room used to be two doors down from here, and it was one of my daughter’s dreams to do something like that someday,” Porter said. “My other daughter bakes all the time, but she had no place to do it. And I had just retired, but I wasn’t ready for the rocking chair.”
So, when the shop at 10 S. Main St. in Woodstown — just a couple doors down from her husband’s long-established business, Lem’s Tailoring and Dry Cleaning — became available, she called her two daughters and the trio decided to go into business together.
Until last year, I hadn't realized how relatively scarce vintage Christmas teawares are. After concluding I simply don't love a lot of the popular Christmas china patterns, I purposed to begin collecting a hodgepodge of vintage ones. I found just two vintage Christmas teacups last year and one this year -- and that latest one from eBay since the antique malls have turned up nothing. My most recently added vintage cup and saucer in a Christmas design is this set made by Royal Tuscan, part of the Wedgwood group.
