Comfort meets energy-efficiency in a restored Holy Cross shotgun

Nelson describes her quaint house as a "laboratory" experiment, using recycled and energy-efficient building materials. New homes are built with conservation in mind, but retrofitting an old home requires some expertise. Nelson is committed to reducing her "carbon footprint."

Nelson's so-called home laboratory is also warm and inviting. She begins her day in a cozy "morning spot," a sitting area surrounded by walls painted a rich hue of Japanese eggplant above which hangs a large graphic print boldly declaring: "Seek Happiness."

"It reminds me that I am responsible for how I view the world and that I have a choice in how I react to life, as it happens," she said.

Tongue-and-groove wainscoting salvaged from a demolished Holy Cross house was painstakingly restored to the wood's original luster.

Clusters of crystals hanging from the east door's transom window cast a spectrum of color across the room as the morning sun emerges over the roofline of the neighboring house.

What To Do With Empty Twinings Tea Tins? Good Question | Apartment ...

I drink lots of Twinings loose-leaf tea. I currently have 10 empty tea tins. I was thinking of painting them and reusing them for dry-good storage, but really they're too small for bulk storage, and too big for herbs and spices. I'd rather not use them as herb plant pots (mostly because I've not had much luck growing herbs). So, what should I do with them?

Editor: Rebecca, one of the ideas we came across is to use the tins to hold q-tips (seen in the photo above). Apparently they're the perfect size. Along those lines, think small storage: buttons, spools of thread, cotton balls, nails, etc. You could also use them to store index cards . Also, this post via The Kitchn gives 6 ways to reuse oatmeal tins, but we think you could pull some of those ideas for tea tins as well.

Other ideas for Rebecca?

Oh, and if you punch a hole in the lid with a nail and hammer, you can use the tin as a dispenser for small balls of twine, just like people do with old coffee cans. With the ball inside and the twine running through the hole, it keeps the ball neat. Just tape the loose end of twine to the side of the tin when you're not using it.
